Ledger Solana Staking FAQ for Cold-Storage Teams (2026)

Use this page as a pre-signing brief for finance, security, and custody stakeholders. Full workflow and controls live in the companion Ledger + Solana staking playbook.

Does delegating SOL to a validator transfer custody?

No—you assign consensus weight, not a wire transfer to the operator’s personal wallet. Custody remains with whoever controls the Ledger seed and device policy. Social attacks pretending to be “validator support” are still in scope for your threat model.

How long is staked SOL illiquid?

Active stake is protocol-locked. When you deactivate, balances usually complete an epoch-based cooldown—often summarized as a few days. Do not promise exact hours in policy; point to live network data at execution time.

What APY should we model?

Use variable ranges only. Inflation, commission, and validator performance move the realized number. Ledger and other vendors publish illustrative figures with disclaimers—treat them as marketing context, not a board-grade forecast.

Is Ledger staking “safe enough” for treasury SOL?

It can meet many teams’ bar because signing happens on a secure element. It is not a substitute for access control, travel rules, or incident response. Pair with hardware wallet audit context when choosing vendors.

What risks do auditors actually ask about?

Validator underperformance, liquidity gaps, malicious or spoofed wallet software, and weak change management around firmware updates. Document who approved each validator and each app version.

Can one stake account split across validators?

No. One active delegation per stake account. Splitting means multiple stake accounts—not one account with many validators.

How do rewards work—do we “claim” them?

Typically rewards accrue into the staked balance over epochs. Spending usually means deactivating a tranche and waiting out cooldown, unless your tooling exposes a different pattern (verify in-app).

Do we need a minimum SOL amount?

Practically yes: you must keep headroom for transaction fees and rent-exempt requirements. Micro-stakes may be uneconomical once fees are counted.

Should we use in-app “recommended” validators only?

That is a policy choice. Curated lists reduce research time; independent selection may improve decentralization goals. Either way, record vote account identity, commission, and review date.

Where do we verify official references?

Start with Ledger’s Solana staking page and Solana Foundation / protocol docs for timing and parameters. Your internal runbook should link both.
